Manhattan Endodontist

Considered a dental emergency, tooth avulsion happens when a tooth is knocked out of its socket because of trauma. When this happens, our Manhattan endodontist, at Dental Specialty Associates, normally attempts to try to replant the tooth as soon as possible. This is a real dental emergency, as you can imagine, and is best treated after 20-40 minutes of an injury. There are two things that determine whether or not it will be easy to replant a tooth. First, the tooth must be kept in an ideal environment (one that is most like the gums), and second, how vital the cells are that remain in the gums. In most situations, it can be reconnected to the socket by means of the periodontal ligament.

The reason our Manhattan endodontist can reattach the tooth is because of the ligament. The ligament is the means that a tooth gets its resources and when it is knocked out, it is stretched out and torn in half. When our endodontist successfully reattaches the two ligaments, it can continue to get blood and resources. If reattachment seems unlikely, the tooth must be artificially maintained until they can reverse the damage done. The damage that is done is known as cell crushing and it occurs when the sensitive areas of a tooth get pressure, resulting in crushed cells in the tooth and ligament that could prevent re-bonding the ligaments in the future.

When dental avulsion occurs to a permanent tooth, it should be handled like a dental emergency and the tooth should be gently rinsed with water. It is very important not to touch the root and handle it as little as possible. Our Manhattan endodontist may attempt to replace it and splint it to the adjacent teeth for several weeks to stabilize it. Tooth avulsion occurs more than one may think and every year in the United States there are approximately 5 million cases reported. Unfortunately, this happens customarily in school aged children as well as military personnel, professional fighters, and people who play contact sports. If an avulsed tooth does not recover in time, our Manhattan endodontist will recommend a dental implant.
